Matthew 6:14 (NKJV): For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
The Greek word translated “forgive” means “to send forth”. It is also translated “leave”. For me, this is a reminder that forgiveness is active. To forgive another takes intention. It takes work. You have to do something in order to forgive another. I think sometimes that it is the hardest part: doing something. We like to think that if we ignore certain things that they will go away. But that is not how we work is it? We are a people that hold onto things and let them fester. We are a people that make things worse through neglect or indifference. Yet God calls us a different way of living. God calls us to live out of agape love, and there is a cost to sacrificial love. There are things we have to sacrifice in our lives to truly love others in the way that Jesus loves us. I am not here to give you a laundry list of things you have to change. That is between you and the Holy Spirit. What I do think I am here to say to me and to you is that to truly forgive in love we have to be willing to set aside our desires and lusts. To truly live in agape love, we have to put ourselves aside and be more like Jesus. Today, may we to learn how to fully live in forgiveness and love with everyone around us.
