Genesis 2:3 (NKJV): Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made.
I grew up hearing people say that you work hard so that you can play hard. What I learned over the years is that this saying is meant to keep you glued at work. The idea of “playing hard” gets pushed off into the future because the work hard is never done. Our society does not honor rhythms to our lives. Our society instead needs us to be constantly working, so that the gears of industry keep grinding. We are required to continually work hard for a prize that never comes. By the time we get to the age where the promise of rest comes from, we are too tired and broken down to enjoy all that hard work. The more I read my Bible, the more I realize that God wants rhythm in our lives. God wants us to be able to have rest during our lives, not just at the end. God wants us to find a rhythm that allows the presence of the LORD in our lives to give us rest from our work. There are things that we need to do to survive in this world. But those are not the only things we need to do. We need to find ways to rest: mentally, physically and spiritually. We need to find ways to allow the LORD to direct our path. We need to find ways to allow love and peace to fill our lives. Today, may we learn the importance of rest and allow the LORD our God to provide it for us.
