Ephesians 2:10 (NIV): For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
The Greek word translated “created” means “to fabricate”. It comes from the word that means “to get” or “to acquire” through the idea of ownership by the maker. Today’s verse is a reminder of Who we belong to: the One who created and redeemed us. We like to buy into the myth that we can be self-made people. The world tries to make it look like being self-reliant is a good and desirable thing. The truth is that when we buy into that myth, we do not leave room for Jesus in our lives. When we try to do only on our own, we deny the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. Our selfishness keeps us separated from God. We are products of the love of the Lord. We exist because Jesus exists. We breath because the Holy Spirit is breath and life. We love and build relationships because that is who Jesus created us to be. We were not created to be lone wolfs. We were not created to be standalone entities. We were made to be in community. We were made to live in forgiveness, love and mercy. Today, may we remember that we are here on purpose to be a part of the love and kingdom of Christ Jesus.
