John 16:7 (NKJV): Nevertheless, I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.
I can only imagine the confusion that the disciples had when Jesus said this. They had been living with Jesus for three years. They ate together. They traveled together. They did ministry together. They had built their whole lives around being in the presence of Jesus. Then, here comes Jesus saying that time is up. There had to be a bit of panic that spread through them. There had to be moments of doubt that they would be able to carry on without Him. Jesus knew this about them. Jesus knew what the reaction to the plan would be. So, Jesus reminds them that there is a plan and that it is something greater than they know. It is a reminder to us too. We are going to have times where we are caught off guard and do not know how to move forward. We are going to find ourselves in times of despair and grief that we do not think will ever end. We are going to find ourselves at a point that we think there is no turning back. In today’s verse, Jesus is here to remind us in those times that there is a plan. There is a way out. There are still forgiveness and mercy. The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is there for us each and every moment of every day. The Holy Spirit is continually there to give us hope and strength. The Holy Spirit is continually there to give us healing and peace. The Holy Spirit is continually there to remind us of the great agape love of Jesus. Today, in whatever we are facing, may we lean into the presence of the Holy Spirit in us to comfort and guide us through the day.
