Proverbs 18:11 (NKJV): The rich man’s wealth is his strong city, and like a high wall in his own esteem.
Today’s verse is a study in why we cannot take verses out of context. This is not something good that is being said about a wealthy person. In fact, in the context of verses 10 and 12, it is a warning. Verse 10 says that “the LORD is a strong tower, and the righteous run to it and are safe”. Verse 12 says that “before destruction the heart of a man is haughty.” Today’s verse is about doing the wrong thing when the LORD our God is calling us to do the correct thing. We are called each day by the LORD our God to avoid the traps of the selfish. We are called each day by the LORD our God to avoid living out of our own power and strength. When we are selfish and think we are good with what we already have, we deny the love of the LORD our God. The LORD is calling us each day to rely on the power and strength of God. The LORD is calling us each day to live out the love and mercy of God. The LORD is calling us each day to live out the forgiveness and peace of God. When we put our life in the proper perspective, we live a live that models the greatness of the LORD our God. Today, may we start to put aside ourselves so that the love of the LORD our God shines in and through us.
