Acts 4:32 (NKJV): Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common.
In the sixty years that I have lived, I have never known of a community like the one described here. I do not even think that I have seen anyone try to create something like this. In fact, I think our society is set up to discourage this kind of community. Selfishness is what helps sell cars. Selfishness is what helps fuel the economy. Selfishness is what leads to division in the world. The idea of a community of humble and unselfish people is treated as toxic to the society that has been built. It is seen as something that could not possibly survive. But there was a time when it did survive and thrived. There was a time that people lived in community in the way Jesus wanted them to. Jesus came to set us free from the constraints of selfishness. Jesus came to set us free to live a life out of agape love. Jesus came to set us free to move through life in ways that mercy and healing came into the lives of people. I do not know how to build the community in today’s verse, but I do know that today I need to start learning how to more fully live into the life that Jesus has brought to me. Today, may we all start learning how to more fully live out the Gospel.
